Reimbursement of Dental Treatment Costs from Private Insurance in Germany – How It Works and How to Recover Up to 100% of Your Expenses

29 July 2025

Dental treatment in Germany, especially services exceeding the basic coverage provided by statutory health insurance (GKV), can be costly. However, thanks to supplementary private dental insurance, patients may be eligible for substantial – and in many cases full – reimbursement of their expenses. Most recently, we once again successfully obtained full reimbursement for one of our patients, further confirming our effectiveness and expertise in this field.

What Is Supplementary Private Dental Insurance?

Private dental insurance in Germany is a voluntary supplementary insurance that covers dental treatment costs beyond what is reimbursed by statutory health insurance (GKV). These insurance plans are primarily intended for individuals who want peace of mind that even expensive prosthetic, implant, or orthodontic treatments will not place a burden on their personal finances.

What Does This Insurance Cover?

Based on the example of Bayerische Beamtenkrankenkasse – ZahnPRIVAT tariff (100, 90, 75), the scope of services may include:

✅ Dental treatment
✅ Prosthetic services (crowns, bridges, dentures)
✅ Pain management measures
✅ Preventive dental care
✅ Orthodontic treatment after the age of 19 in cases of illness or accident
✅ Orthodontic treatment before the age of 19 (only in tariffs 100 and 90)
✅ Teeth whitening (bleaching) – only in tariffs 100 and 90

Naturally, the exact benefits depend on the selected tariff. The higher the coverage level (e.g., ZahnPRIVAT 100), the broader the reimbursement – in many cases up to 100% of the treatment costs.

What Is Not Covered?

✘ Treatments that are not medically necessary
✘ Orthodontics and bleaching in lower tariffs (e.g., ZahnPRIVAT 75)
✘ Conditions or injuries resulting from intentional actions (e.g., self-harm)

Policyholder's Conditions and Obligations

  • Prior to concluding the insurance contract, the applicant must disclose all relevant health information truthfully and completely.

  • Insurance coverage is generally lifelong and there are no waiting periods.

  • The insurance contract may only be terminated after two years, with a three-month notice period.

  • Reimbursement cannot exceed actual incurred costs, even if covered by multiple sources (e.g., GKV + Beihilfe + private insurance).
